2011 Plans: Hymns

For 2011, here are the hymns we're planning on memorizing by month.

January: Review hymns from 2010.  I plan on doing a lot of review in January
February: Amazing Grace ... because we haven't learned this one yet!
March: Stricken, Smitten and Afflicted
April: Up From the Grave He Arose
May: Oh, For a Thousand Tongues to Sing!
June: Jesus! What A Friend for Sinners
July: Hallelujah, Praise Jehovah, O My Soul
August: Praise to the Lord, The Almighty
September: Come, Thou, Almighty King
October: Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken
November: All People that On Earth Do Dwell

Yuletide Session will probably be the same hymns as we did this year.

Editing to add: The "months" are kind of amorphous.  We learn one verse a week when we learn hymns.  We'll do 6 weeks, for example, of Amazing Grace and, as you might imagine, February doesn't have 6 weeks.  If you learn one verse per week (minus one week in June), this schedule should work for you.   I also tried to learn Death/Resurrection hymns before Resurrection Sunday.

  1. fernando ortega does a really pretty arrangement of "stricken, smitten, and afflicted".

  2. Thanks, Jen. I love FO. Do you know, is it pretty traditional? We're learning hymns so we can sing during worship, so learning the tune is almost as important as learning the words.

  3. Isn't it wonderful to hear our littles sing, esp during worship? I have many hymns that I sing softly or hum when I'm going about my day b/c I learned them as a child. It's a huge blessing! :)

  4. Heather, my sister got married last Sunday and two of the hymns during her service (there were 8!) were hymns we memorized last year (Come, Thou Fount and Be Thou My Vision) ... my mom, in the pew ahead of us, was amazed to hear them singing all the words. It was great!
